Enhanced Delivery of Video-on-Demand Streams to Heterogeneous Receivers*

چکیده
The required real-time and high-rate transfers for multimedia data severely limit the number of requests that can be serviced concurrently by Video-on-Demand (VOD) servers. Resource sharing techniques can be used to address this problem. We study how VOD servers can support heterogeneous receivers while delivering data in a client-pull fashion using enhanced resource sharing. We propose three hybrid solutions. The first solution simply combines existing resource sharing techniques and deals with clients as two bandwidth classes. The other two solutions, however, classify clients into multiple bandwidth classes and service them accordingly by capturing the proposed ideas of Adaptive Stream Merging or Enhanced Adaptive Stream Merging, respectively. We also discuss how scheduling policies can be adapted to the heterogeneous environment so as to exploit the variations in client bandwidth, and we briefly explore the advantages of combining the proposed solutions with Layered Video Coding. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed solutions and analyze various scheduling policies through extensive simulation.

Layered self-identifiable and scalable video codec for delivery to heterogeneous receivers
This paper describes the development of a layered structure of a multi-resolutional scalable video codec based on the Color Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (CSPIHT) scheme. The new structure is designed in such a way that it supports the network Quality of Service (QoS) by allowing packet marking in a real-time layered multicast system with heterogeneous clients. Also, it provides (spati...

Communication environments are becoming increasingly heterogeneous. This imposes new challenges on communication support for multimedia and collaborative applications. AMnet (Active Multicasting Network) provides multi-point communication support for large-scale groups with heterogeneous receivers. Active Multicasting nodes inside the network include so-called QoS filters that remove informatio...
متن کاملAMnet: Active Multicasting Network
Today we are faced with an increasing variety of networks and end systems. The resulting heterogeneous environment imposes new challenges on communication support for multimedia and collaborative applications. AMnet is an approach that provides multipoint communication support for large-scale groups with heterogeneous receivers. Active network nodes are used to deliver data streams with user-ta...
متن کاملQuality-Adaptive Proxy Caching for Peer-to-Peer Video Streaming Using Multiple Description Coding
In the past few years, video streaming has been one of the most prominent applications in the Internet. There are basically two types of approaches to deliver on-demand video streams: infrastructure-based and infrastructure-less. The infrastructure-based approach, also known as the content delivery network (CDN) approach, employs numerous replicate servers and proxies to assist video streaming....
متن کاملEnd-to-end Support for Multimedia QoS in the Internet
An increasing demand for multimedia data delivery coupled with reliance in best-effort networks, such as the Internet, has spurred interest on effective Quality of Service (QoS) management for multimedia streams. Since today’s multimedia applications are expected to run in physically heterogeneous environments composed of both wired and wireless components, we assess the efficiency of transport...
